A capacity crowd gathered in Melbourne’s Town Hall to hear one of the world’s leading miners speak on the rebuilding process underway at the South African mining institution. AngloGold Ashanti is one of the world's leading gold producers, with a portfolio of long-life, relatively low-cost assets in key gold-producing regions around the world including 20 operations across four continents, and a substantial project pipeline and exploration program.

A native Australian, Mr Cutifani highlighted the shared and contrasting Australian and South Africa perspectives providing insight into the unique challenge he faced. Shared as in – “a colonial history, pioneering spirit, defining cultural icons and immensely competitive streak”. And contrasting – where in Australia “the concept of mateship that defines the way we see and manage people”, to the ‘Rainbow Nation’ “still defining its character after the 1994 democratization of the country”.  

Interspersed with plenty of light-hearted humour, Mark’s presentation certainly made it clear that AngloGold Ashanti had a prosperous yet challenging future ahead, was well positioned to expand its presence on the world scene and teach rivals a thing or two in the process!
