Where to, for the Resources Industry?

Australia leads the world in many aspects of this industry, the cornerstone of this country’s wealth generation. However it seems the focus, when talking about the Resources industry, would suggest that we are still seen in the light of pillagers and exploiters with huge profits going overseas. The political debate surrounding the Carbon Tax seems to be enhancing and promoting this view for the sake of political expediency despite the huge contribution the industry is making to the development, employment opportunities, financial sustainability and growth of this country.

GENDER DIVERSITY…ARE YOU READY?----By Jan Macpherson

As of 30 June 2010 the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) now requires Australian companies to develop a diversity policy, set measurable objects to increase gender diversity and report on outcomes. Companies will be required to either adopt the recommendations by 1 January 2011 or explain in their annual report why they have not done so.

2010 Swann Global Salary Survey

Companies Invited to Join Swann’s Annual Salary Survey in China
The annual survey of salaries paid to people in the international mining community in China is well underway. But it is not too late for companies who wish to participate. Speaking in Shanghai, Head of Research at Swann Global in China, Ms Zhang Jing, said “this is the sixth year that we have done this study and the results over the years have told a story about the operation of international mining companies and mining industry associated firms in the China market. This is the only such snapshot of the labour market in China’s mining industry”.

2009 Swann Global Salary Survey of China International Mining Industry

Background
Swann Global is glad to release the fourth Salary Survey Report conducted by Swann’s Asia Research Unit with member companies of the China International Mining Group (CIMG). In 2009, Swann Global continued our cooperation with the previous participants, while many new comers also volunteered to be a part of the survey. Since 2006, Swann Global has been taking a close look at the China international mining industry by interviewing the major multinational players in this market regarding the salaries that they pay to their staff.

The year of 2009 has been extraordinary for most businesses across the sectors all over the world. In addition to the standard examination of the compensation of managers, professional/technical occupations, skills and support people, there was also attention paid to the impact of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC. The outcome revealed the severity of the GFC impact on these companies, while also looking at the participants’ confidence in the recovery; especially with regard to the China market.

That Was Fun! What Does the Next 10 Years Look Like?

Rarely has former BHP Billiton CEO Chip Goodyear given a speech on the global mining industry since he retired from that role in late 2007. This made his speech in Shanghai at the latest Oriental Mining Club event a real drawcard for the mining community in China. The Oriental Mining Club brings together the Asian and Western mining community for networking and open exchange of views. The OMC values and emphasizes diversity, enjoyable events and high calibre presenters. Mr Goodyear attracted a sell-out crowd from all sections of the industry.
From high in the International Finance Centre, overlooking Shanghai’s skyline, Mr Goodyear’s theme for the night was “That was fun. What’s the next 10 years look like?” His speech below gives some thought provoking reflections that come from a man who led the world’s largest diversified miner for five success filled years.
